BulemiaBulemia or bulemia nervosa is one of several eating disorders which create tremendous havoc in one’s life physically, emotionally and spiritually. The behavior of someone with bulemia nervosa has to do with uncontrolled binge eating for a defined period of time, to be followed by a particular method of ridding oneself of the food consumed, commonly referred to as purging. Some of the methods most often used are; self induced vomiting, laxative and diuretic abuse, compulsive exercise or enemas. All of these purging activities are ways in the mind of the bulimic to control and lose weight. Bulemia nervosa, always known as a women’s disorder, is certainly not limited to women. More and more men are coming forward to admit themselves to bulemia treatment. While there is certainly more pressure on women to maintain a certain weight or shape as each culture demands, men have difficulty managing feelings like stress and anxiety, living up to societies expectations or excelling as the family provider. In all of these examples, people turn to or away from food as a means of managing weight, feelings, life or anything they interface with. Upon entering bulemia treatment, clinicians found that denial is one of the first issues they had to deal with. Most patients thought they looked just fine (distorted body image), even if greatly underweight, felt they could find a way to manage their purging, felt they were still in control and were terrified of weight gain. For help call now! Bulemia treatment must take on a very gradual pace to recovery. The path to recovery is often fraught with resistance, defiance and denial. When patients in bulemia treatment are asked to refrain from purging their first thought is to run for fear of weight gain. If they had been abusing laxatives and diuretics and discontinue their use they will experience water retention which they will equate with weight gain when it will actually dissipate within days. In either case, the clinical and medical team working in bulemia treatment must be aware of all the dynamics associated with treating bulemia nervosa if they are to provide effective eating disorder treatment.
